Lonely Hearts

Aroview: The true tale of 1940s “lonely hearts killers”, Martha Beck and Raymond Martinez Fernandez who would lure war widows through personal ads and then kill them, is given an all-star treatment in this evocative retelling.

The director’s grandfather was the real-life investigating policeman into the murders, and the film benefits from this meticulous inside knowledge. While this neo-noir could do with a bit more bite, Jared Leto and Salma Hayek are surprisingly well suited to their kinky characters, and frequently tear up the screen.
