Love + Hate
Aroview: Pakistani Muslims and British xenophobes clash in this racially charged prism of disparate cultures and forbidden love.
Young love and interracial relationships caught in between family pressures and racism has often made believably angry cinema, and this film takes a blowtorch to the double standards of both cultures. The acting is top-notch, and the grimy setting bears a strong resemblance to the territory occupied by Ken Loach. While the plot contrivances may jar against the film’s realist aesthetic, this is a tense and moving piece of work.
