Shut Up and Sing
Aroview: Politics ("shut up") and music ("sing") find themselves reluctantly linked in this portrait of country superstars, "The Dixie Chicks", and the controversial aftermath of lead singer Natalie Maines' infamous anti-George W. Bush broadside in 2003.
Though a minor addition to the canon of docos politically grounded in post-9/11 paranoia, this has weight as a candid look at the machinations of the music industry, with the 'Chicks' themselves centre stage of the music, the marketing and multiple motherhood, and who understandably exhibit a little paranoia of their own in the face of a hostile 'patriot' America. But ultimately it is the unaffected charm of these women and the strength of their music that wins through, a powerful combination that will no doubt win them plenty more fans besides.
