China / Hong Kong 2006, 114 minutes
Dir. Zhang Yimou
In Mandarin with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Action/Adventure / Martial Arts
Feat. Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, Jay Chou
Aroview: Another sumptuous Tang Dynasty epic in martial arts from the dir. of HERO, cast in the mould of a Shakespearian power struggle between an Emperor, an Empress, and other scheming heirs to the throne.
A giddy mix of intrigue, betrayal and obsession in imperial China, dir. Zhang propagates the usual sensory overload audiences have come to expect from a recent spate of wuxia pan films, albeit on a larger, warmongering scale. Fronted by marque Asian stars Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li, the film’s escalating budget (reportedly the most expensive Chinese production in history) offers plenty of style over substance, and though less intimate, is swathed in much astonishing, breathtaking imagery.

4 stars (Very Good) While not as deep as Crouching Tiger, or as focussed as Hero, this has a number of breathtaking and epic moments, and a unique visual style with plenty of vivid colour. If you love Zhang's other outings, you should see it - if not, stay away. ~Tom H
3 stars (Good Enough) The excess bloodshed was demeaning to the high-quality production values. The colours in the quality set designs and wardrobe were stunning. ~Tubbs
