Becoming Jane
Aroview: The early chapters of Jane Austen’s literary life are dramatised in this rose-tinted biopic of her formative romantic experiences.
Unapologetically embellished, a porcelain-complexioned Hathaway plays the eponymous author lovingly, but never realistically, setting the tone for an appropriately romanticised novella that Austen fans will find comforting, if unenlightening. James McAvoy adds to the prose as Jane’s real life ‘Mr Darcy’, and their intellectual tango lives up to the cherished love affairs Austen would famously commit to paper.

3 stars (Good Enough) As expected the props and wardrobe are spot on. There is cream in the supporting cast headed by Maggie Smith and Ian Richardson. ~Tubbs
