Aroview: Two sisters negotiate the turbulent rise of communism in China during the 1940s in this family melodrama.

Sensuously filmed in tones reminiscent of the gorgeous 50s Sirk melodramas, and with an emotional palette to match, the tremendous acting does much to elevate the potentially tepid subject matter into rich and rewarding territory.
