Black Gold
Aroview: Urgent, surprisingly constructive expose of world coffee trade, tackling the exploitation of third world bean farmers by corporations, middlemen, and global expresso chains.
Not so easily dismissed as a documentary aboard the social-activist bandwagon, this provides a timely and unfussy illustration of what's wrong with the deregulated coffee trade, in conjunction with clear and practical resolutions to the problem. Though less concerned with formalism or arresting visuals, dir. Francis gets his message across cogently enough.

4 stars (Very Good) One of those doco's that pulls on the morality strings of a total caffeine fiend such as myself. ~Baby
4 stars (Very Good) Africa's place in the global trading system is well explained. Africa's plea is to be able to trade on a level playing field and not have to compete against subsidies seems reasonable enough. Go, Africa! A great (African of course) soundtrack. ~Tubbs
