Our Country
Aroview: Hard-nosed ensemble drama aims straight at the Italian big business jugular, levelling broadsides at capitalism and Big Brother as it critiques the modern-day fixation with money-making and the backhanded corruption that underpins and oversees it.
Thinly veiling its corporation-as-organised-crime-outfit sentiments (the translated Italian title is a pointed reference to the Mafia), the film's conspiratorial tone occasionally wears thin, as do the rapidly intersected narratives, which provide limited opportunities for insight into character motivation. Nevertheless, the dressed-up melodramatics and the decadent glamour of Milan will hold strong appeal to soap opera fans in particular.
