Aroview: Rebel iconoclast of Japanese cinema, Takashi Miike, unveils his creepiest film since AUDITION: a hellishly disorientating – yet markedly restrained – inbred nightmare about a walkabout yakuza corpse in small town Japan.
Trading in the usual ghoulish Miike-isms – semen, lactation, the various states of bodily horror – this plays out like a prolonged episode of TWIN PEAKS, replete with freakish characters, backwater mores, and lurking evil in close proximity. Ends with the shocking audacity of AUDITION, preceded by slow-burn pacing, arbitrary dream logic, and an impregnated sense of terror.
