Beowulf
Aroview: Originally earmarked for 3D IMAX cinemas, this groundbreaking animation brings to screen the Old English epic of hero Beowulf (Winstone) and his quest to defeat the flesh-eating, foul-looking, Danish fun-hating monster Grendel and his fiercely protective witchy woman of a mother (Jolie, in anachronistic yet saucy gold paint and heels).
Improving on THE POLAR EXPRESS’ life-like animation watershed (where actors are motion captured, then ‘clothed’ in digital textures), the film’s wow-factor is strictly in its 3D presentation, a novelty lost on the home video format. As an adaptation, it combines messy revisionism (from a script by Roger Avary and Neil Gaiman) with a curious CG-rendered erotism best appreciated by puerile adults. Also features cult actor Crispin Glover (reuniting with dir. Zemeckis after an acrimonious split from the BACK TO THE FUTURE series) in the role of Grendel.
