Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Aroview: Uber-comedy scribe Judd Apatow sends up the recent spate of musical biopics, with John C. Reilly posing as the film's titular, hard livin' rock and roll legend.
Mocking that trajectory of self-destructing celebrity – gifted musician turns superstar turns victim of greed and excess – this walks a familiar line in genre spoof. Under the guidance of Apatow though, the standard of parody is smart and crisply timed. Reilly proves an engaging, in-tune frontman, performing all his own songs with gusto and lyrical jest, with clever music references, in lieu of the usual slapstick, another welcome point of difference.
