Coeurs
Aroview: Romantic French drama with a vulnerable edge explores the modern dilemmas of loneliness and adoration through the lives of six alienated Parisians whose worlds unexpectedly intersect.
Dir. Resnais's trademark formal elegance is put to striking use here, melding layers of expressionistic symbolism with an enigmatic je ne sais quoi, while the solid cast pepper the overall melancholic atmosphere with flecks of hope and flawed yet heartfelt humanity. In no particular hurry to offer easy resolutions, this lingers a little on the periphery without fully engaging in its modern malaise, but is nonetheless absorbing on a number of different levels.
