Show of Hands
Aroview: Quaint but contrived Kiwi rom-dram set in New Plymouth in which a grab-bag of townsfolk compete for new 4-wheel drive by keeping their hands upon it for the longest duration.
With its collection of stereotypes, incongruous DJ 'narrator', and awkward backstory involving a bankrupt car-dealer, this never shrugs off its initial conception as a tele-play adaptation of director McCarten own's novel. The worth-watching Lynsky and Hall both make a good fist of it, but their character chemistry (meter-maid-solo-mum and yuppie-cynic respectively) is all thumbs. For a slice of the real McCoy using the same premise, see HANDS ON A HARD BODY.
