My Kid Could Paint That
Aroview: The story of a 4-year-old art "prodigy" turns into a controversial debate when it becomes apparent that her abstract brushwork may well be the work of the child's father.
As demand for her artworks skyrocket and then plummet as perceptions of value oscillate accordingly, this provides a first-hand account of the machinations and pretensions of the art world 'industry' and media interests. The as-it-happens recording of events at such a personal level heightens the stakes, particularly in respect of a "60 Minutes" expose which discredited the parents' claims and reverses their fortunes.
The film-maker self-consciously negotiates thorny moral territory with his slippery subjects, and though the truth proves ultimately elusive, he at least succeeds in leaving an indelible impression in any viewer's mind.
