Signal, The
Aroview: This promising triptych of horror stories centres on a mysterious viral signal which, via electronic transmissions, sends those exposed to its frequency into a homicidal frenzy.
Hinged anxiously on the survivalist instinct, the film as a whole (shared by three directors) maintains a grim visual coherency, but a somewhat wayward tone. Invariably, the results are mixed, with the middle chapter – a hilarious satire in which a homemaker prepares for her New Year’s celebrations despite the ensuing chaos – proving the most inspired and incongruous segment of the film. Its bookends, far more conventional instances of zombie/post-apocalyptic horror, serve up a reasonable splattering of thrills, spills and gore.
