Far North

UK 2007, 89 minutes
Dir. Asif Kapadia
Genres: Suspense/Crime, Drama / Romance

Aroview: On the Arctic tundra a starving stranger is thrown upon the charity of two Inuit women, driven to isolation by fear of prophecy and a violent past, igniting passions and a shocking betrayal.

Beautifully shot exteriors are invested with the stillness and silence present in KOYAANISQATSI, soon quickened by glimpses of colonial incursion, recollections of paths crossed by love and brutality, and the disruptive arrival of an aptly named deserter. Glacial grace is reflected in the poise of Yeoh, powerful and in control.

Precise historical details are scant, at times contradictory, leaving room for symbolism to flourish in an alien time and space. The film unfolds as a mythical drama drifting steadily, even as the sea freezes, toward a fantastical, macabre denouement.
