Mr. Untouchable
Aroview: Sensational true story of Nicky Barnes, the most powerful New York kingpin in the 1970's drug world, covering his incredible rise from junkie beginnings to his inevitable fall from grace.
Although dir. Levin can't seem to help but glorify the 'superfly' Barnes, soaking his doco in champagne, dollar bills and a funky 70s soundtrack, he still manages to offer us devastating insight into the human cost of Barnes' heroin empire. The slick, uber-cool portrait of the man himself (currently still in hiding) means his eventual downfall packs less of a punch, for who wants to see the party end?
