Underworld: Rise Of The Lycans
Aroview: Latest in the long-suffering Underworld series focuses on the origins of the ancient feud between the vampires and the Lycans.
This seriously pitched prequel concerns itself with a weighty tome of folklore served to the viewer by an oddly po-faced Sheen and a predictably camp Nighy, but without the allure of leather-clad Underworld veteran Kate Beckinsale. Die-hard fans will probably still love the blend of gothic romanticism and action, cynics will enjoy seeing such accomplished actors punch well below their weight, and for the rest of us, there's a minor thrill in recognising Underworld's version of 'western Hungary', aka Auckland, New Zealand.

3 stars (Good Enough) Fans of the series will undoubtedly enjoy this third outing, but for me, close to all the appeal of the first has been lost (including Beckinsale – although Mitra is admittedly a fair replacement). ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) More of the same. ~Tubbs
