Sweden 2007, 95 minutes
Dir. Roy Andersson
In Swedish with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama / Black Comedy
Aroview: Master of the painstaking, deadpan vignette, Roy Andersson, continues his singular and obsessive vision with this absurdist comedy of malaise.
Steadfast in style and apocalyptic mood, dir. Andersson could be accused of merely rehashing SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR’s unmistakable design: of lifeless interiors and powder-faced lost souls, seemingly shot in laboratory conditions. The remarkable and compulsive visuals though are matched with genuinely bright and funny moments that cut through the meticulous art direction and ironic doom and gloom. Especially impressive among its windows into Swedish depression: an extended dream sequence in which a dreary shoe-box apartment transforms into a carriage on a train!

5 stars (Exceptional) A friend described it as a minimalist "musical", a notion which only makes it that much funnier, and stranger. Andersson's compassion for his subjects' predicament (life) delightfully offsets his Kubrickian formal rigour. Weirdly wonderful. ~fairbrother
4 stars (Very Good) Andersson's comedy is enhanced because it is set on a wonderful base of depression through its set designs (lack of or mundane furnishings), subdued lighting and bad weather. Tomorrow is another day. ~Tubbs
