Songs from the Second Floor
Aroview: Various rotund men of retirement age face personal crises in a series of unsettling, stylised vignettes that could be collectively read as an absurdist parable of millennial doom and middle age despair.
Obsessively composed over four years by dir. Roy Andersson, this is determinedly non-conformist in theme and execution, deliberately photographed in greyish-green hues and without a single ‘close-up’. It’s a film of fascinating, bleak moments, though its success as a whole is openly left to the eye of the adventurous beholder.
