Aroview: Mamoru Oshii’s (GHOST IN THE SHELL) latest head-scratcher conceives an alternate World War II-reality around another conceptually dense narrative, in which teenage pilots are being genetically engineered to fight corporate-endorsed aerial battles.
Eschewing the mind-bending futurism of Oshii’s previous anime classics for a more contemplative, existential tone, this boasts stunningly realised dogfight sequences drawn through a blend of hand-drawn and CG animation to offset the, admittedly, sluggish pace and profundity.

4 stars (Very Good) It was hard to distinguish the characters physically - even gender - but this might have been deliberate. Impressive action visuals and good story. ~Tubbs
