USA 2009, 146 minutes
Dir. Judd Apatow
Genres: Comedy, Drama
Aroview: Judd Apatow (KNOCKED UP) helms this muddled comedy about a lonely but successful stand-up comedian (Sandler) who discovers he has an incurable disease, so sets out to make a real friend out of a comedy rookie (Rogan).
The first half dwells on mortality with subtle restraint, Apatow's usual boy-man protag played with sincerity from a doe-eyed Sandler. Rogan, too, is nicely subdued as his doting protege-cum-nurse, and Jonah Hill steals virtually every scene he's in as the 'chubby friend'. It is almost enough to forgive the confused, over-long second half, which feels like another film entirely.

2 stars (Good Try) Considering the cast and the title, this is a disappointing comedy that fails to provide many laughs, and plays out more like a drama despite providing little insight to the life of a stand-up comedian. So many missed opportunities. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) Like 'Knocked Up', the uncomfortable mix of comedy and drama made me queasy. I did watch it, but I think I prefer the Seinfeld/Larry David 'No Hugging, No Learning' approach. And it is so very long... ~HiFi
1 star (Turkey) If it is any consolation to Sandler and company - I don't think real comedians would have been able to do much with the material either. ~Tubbs
