Broken English
Aroview: The usually zany Parker Posey searches for love in this supple, melancholic romantic comedy, here playing a Manhattan thirty-something as yet unsuccessful in the relationship department.
Dir. Zoe Cassavetes (daughter of John and Gena Rowlands, the latter co-starring) earns praise for her inward approach to standard issue material, foregoing the fluffy romantic horseplay expected of the genre, and favoring a more identifiable perspective on matters of womanhood and female angst. While this means the film is limited as a comic vehicle, those seeking a thoughtful, down-to-earth take on the SEX AND THE CITY mindset will gladly forgive its lack of glam for the low-key dramatic rewards it offers (as well as male eye-candy, provided by the gorgeous Melvil Poupaud).
