Girlfriend Experience, The

Aroview: Ex-pornstar Sasha Grey impresses as a high-end call girl offering much more than just sex for her Manhattan clientele, in this small scale, stylised indie-drama from the ever-eclectic Steven Soderbergh.

Prostitution and economic recession make unlikely thematic bedfellows yet they are somehow compatible as Grey's character becomes a shoulder to cry on for her well-heeled regulars who are variously facing down the tough times. Meanwhile she develops 'boundary issues' with her live-in boyfriend. Restaurant-chic decor and a startling percussive soundtrack are key to the 'experience' though the impressionistic, detached style may frustrate viewers looking for more conventional titillation.
