Private Lives of Pippa Lee, The

USA 2009, 98 minutes
Dir. Rebecca Miller
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama / Independent, Girl-centric

Topics: Mid-life.

Aroview: Drama boasting a formidable performance from Robin Wright Penn as the beautiful, middle-aged Pippa Lee, who finds herself living in a retirement village after her much older husband (Arkin) has a series of heart attacks.

Pippa’s present-day predicament is spliced with generous backstory (played by two other actresses) which explain her privileged yet unhappy circumstances, but the narrative has an impulsive quality that leaves the talented and sympathetic Wright Penn to do the heavy lifting, ahead of an otherwise starry cast. Based on the writer-director's novel of the same name.
