Romance Of Astrea and Ceadon, The
Aroview: Eric Rohmer, master of the seasonal romantic tryst, steps out with this playful adaptation of a 17th century French novel, in which a handsome shepherd, after a misunderstanding with his wife to be, finds himself on the outer and in the care of comely handmaidens. Best left unspoiled, the film’s bizarre mix absurdity and seriousness adds a level of intrigue and guesswork to an otherwise pleasant treatment of period romance.
