Objectified
Aroview: Gary Hustwit’s follow-up to the superb typography documentary HELVETICA delves into the unseen world of industrial design, investigating and fetishising everyday objects: potato peelers, toothbrushes, office chairs, etc.
Conceived as a sequel to HELVETICA (with a third design film already in the works), this follows a similar, illuminating format, with the theory, rationale, and ergonomics behind key designs explored and supplemented by industry talking heads. While the discussion of form vs. function is again central to the documentary’s appeal, dir. Hustwit also responsibly detours to address environmentalism, consumerism, and globalisation: pertinent issues that present the gadgets we take for granted in a whole new light.
