USA 2010, 117 minutes
Dir. Matthew Vaughn
Rating: [R18]
Genres: Action/Adventure, Science Fiction, Comedy
Topics: Superheroes.
Aroview: Adapted from the kick-ass graphic novel, this gleeful bone-cruncher portrays a world in which wannabe superheroes don costumes and fight bad guys despite an absence of superpowers.
Structured around a series of massive brawls, Dir. Vaughn carries this along at a racy, anarchic pace, yet the characters give it its beating heart - Aaron Johnston and Christopher Mintz-Plasse make great geeks-turned-geeks-in-spandex, and Nicolas Cage is at a career-high(!) as the cop-turned-anti-hero, ‘Big Daddy’. It is a young Chloe Moretz as Big Daddy’s daughter, however, who steals the show - her steely, smack-talking ‘Hit Girl’ right up there with the most memorable child characters of all time.

3 stars (Good Enough) An odd action/comedy/superhero(ish) film that was not at all what I expected. Some good fight scenes, funny moments, and an interesting everyman-hero (not super) who teams up with other antiheroes to take down some fairly typical bad guys. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) Affectionate superhero satire; great action; hilarious black comedy; nice coming of age story with a great message for kids about keeping things in perspective. Shame about the rating; if they put in a bit of Christian torture porn it could’ve been R16. ~SteveParkes
2 stars (Good Try) It is a good plot idea and the screenplay has some good segments involving Mark Strong and young Chloe but it really needed to be a bit shorter. ~Tubbs
