Big Fan
Aroview: The writer of THE WRESTLER makes an assured directing debut with this tragicomic look at the life of an obsessive fan of the New York Giants whose encounter with his favourite player doesn't go as planned.
Stand-up man Patton Oswalt is just right as the 36-year-old schlub who has settled into the narrow, flabby comforts of his banal day job, fast food and football. It's a thoughtful look at sports tribalism, celebrity worship and working-class male malaise, but is also empathetic (and amusing) enough to extend its appeal beyond the festival crowd to sports fans and obsessives of any persuasion.
