Mother and Child

Aroview: Thoughtfully handled ensemble drama focuses on the maternal and filial ties that bind, centered around three women; an unhappy therapist, the daughter she gave up for adoption 35 years ago, and a woman looking to adopt a child of her own.

Earnest metaphysical tale from writer/director Garcia has its flaws, with an unwise detour into magical-realism and some on-the-nose dialogue, but as in his previous films, Garcia has a gift for writing strong female characters and attracting formidable actors to play them, with Bening in particular relishing her role.
