“A masterful exploration of aging, family bonds, strength and loneliness.”~Andrew Hedley, flicks.co.nz
Aroview: A happily married middle-aged couple attempt to fix up their cheery, if secretly depressed friend in this honest domestic drama, another winner from dir. Mike Leigh.
Told over four seasons in the director's unapologetically conservative style, he replays his many trademark motifs and archetypes of 'happy' and 'sad' people that is not always comfortable, and not above histrionics. Here, however, his characters are given ample time and room to rewardingly flourish, and Lesley Manville in particular, as a wine-swilling forty-something lonely-heart, proves as memorable and moving as any of Leigh's screen heroines.

4 stars (Very Good) A little sad, but very well done. My wife thought it didn't really go anywhere, which is true, but that's mainly because it's character oriented rather than plot oriented. Leslie Manville was the standout (as a 50 something surely?). ~s36e175
5 stars (Exceptional) A film as funny, sad, and deceptively simple as everyday life itself. Leslie Manville is astonishing. Leigh's finest since Secrets and Lies and, for my money, the best movie of 2010. ~fairbrother
