Aroview: The dir. of MOON helms this smart sci-fi thriller, about a soldier (Gyllenhaal) thrust ‘neurologically’ into the shoes of a dead eyewitness whose memory of a train bombing may provide the key to preventing further terrorist attacks.
Recycling classic interpretations around the paradoxes and complexities of time travel, the film itself is a repetitive watch, insofar as its premise of investigating the last eight minutes of the witness’s life for clues (before the bomb detonates) is revisited over and over again. While this gives rise to a plot that resembles a vintage murder mystery with action aesthetics (heightened by the locomotive setting), less can be said of the science-fiction concept, which begins promisingly, only to betray the boundaries of the story’s time travel thesis. Nevertheless, an entertaining head-scratcher with enough engaging ideas to separate it from the pack of save-the-world, against-the-clock thrillers.

4 stars (Very Good) Flashy, intelligent and exciting. It doesn't have the depth, impact or sheer brilliance of Moon, but this is still way above average for the sci-fi/action genre. ~Wizzums
4 stars (Very Good) way better than i thought i would be ~nic
4 stars (Very Good) Duncan Jones (AKA Zowie Bowie) again proves that he has an eye for sci-fi - not as chilling as Moon, but a great film that surpassed expectations of just another Hollywood blockbuster. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) An action thriller which explores some of the same issues as the sparse and understated Moon. Good intelligent script. Cinematography, acting, dramatic tension-- it's all spot on. One of the best SF films of recent years. ~Anon
3 stars (Good Enough) Good plot idea. Gyllenhaal's character got a bit irritating. ~Tubbs
