Nostalgia for the Light
“An exquisitely filmed, poetically written meditation on how past and present fuse in humanity's most unresolved questions.”~Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
Aroview: Famed documentarian Patricio Guzmán directs this mesmerizing journey into Chile’s recent and faraway past through the annals of astronomy, archaeology, and history.
Driven by a childhood fascination with the cosmos, Guzmán places the philosophy behind the science of astronomy at the forefront of his investigation (situated around a high-tech observatory in Chile’s Atacama desert), though eventually departs from stargazing to delve into the traumatic events of Pinochet’s regime. Best viewed as an essayist’s alternative to CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS, Guzmán’s film is similarly engrossed in the search for our origins, yet arguably strikes a deeper, introspective chord through its personal and political voice.

4 stars (Very Good) The connections between astronomers searching the skies, archaeologists studying mummies and women searching the desert for fragnents (literally) of disappeared children doesn't quite achieve the profundity it might, but the attempt is remarkable. ~Anon
