“A journey to prehistory that's simultaneously wondrous and tedious, profound and completely nuts -- which is to say, quintessential Herzog.”~NPR
Aroview: Although intended to be viewed in 3-D, this extraordinary trip inside the Chauvet caves of Southern France – home to the oldest known pictorial creations of humankind – retains both the power and reverence of the cinema experience at home.
Thanks largely to Herzog’s serio-comic inquisition and endless fascination with scientists and explorers, the documentary captivates as a history of the dawn of mankind through the obsession of its archeological gatekeepers. The caves themselves are the star attraction though, filmed in lengthy, lyrical passages befitting of the surrealist mode that Herzog’s cinema so often drifts into.

4 stars (Very Good) A privilege that we have been given access to these paintings - thanks Werner. ~Tubbs
4 stars (Very Good) A great introduction to the oldest human art yet known. Very interesting, especially the alternative theory as to who these paintings were meant for. A vital art doco, without compare ~Sandy
