While building on the disquieting atmosphere of his accomplished debut feature, SHOTGUN STORIES, dir. Nichols adds to his repertoire a clear-sighted and intelligent handling of human drama, with a high attention to detail evident in the way he examines the psychological turmoil of his troubled protagonist (played intensely by Michael Shannon). At the heart of the film though is a serious depiction of mental illness where the usual histrionics have been replaced by a disturbing sense of dread, one that feels all too real in this current climate of economic and environmental uncertainty.

4 stars (Very Good) The tornado as metaphor for destructive and disruptive descent into schizophrenia. David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock would understand. Slow paced, meticulous. Michael Shannon outstanding in lead role. Look forward to more films directed by Jeff Nichols. ~Anon
4 stars (Very Good) Immaculately crafted, but Nichols seems so busy rigorously avoiding any stylistic flourishes, special pleading or filmic cliches that he somehow forgets to establish any persuasive identity for the characters or the film itself. ~HiFi

1 star (Turkey) This movie goes nowhere very very slowly. The acting is some of the worst I have ever seen in a Sony movie. Do yourself a favor and steer clear of this looser. ~Takaka Guy
