Killing Them Softly
“A character-rich genre piece largely short-circuits thrills to sketch a grimly funny portrait of thugs taking care of business.”~Variety
Aroview: Ex-pat Kiwi Andrew Dominik helms this sullen gangland thriller, about a professional enforcer (Pitt) hired to track down the amateur criminals responsible for hijacking a Mob-sanctioned poker game.
Full of typecast roles, overreaching dialogue, and boorish violence, Dominik's latest effort is a far cry from his previous film, the western masterpiece THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES. And although crafted with style and restraint, its on-the-nose politics and unsubtle recessionary milieu are blunt edges too significant to ignore.
