“A unique, audacious studio movie, kicking off as a star-driven spectacle before whittling itself down to a raw and riveting character study. ”~Slant
Aroview: Denzel Washington plays a lauded pilot whose heroic landing of a crippled airliner is called into question when a history of alcoholism and substance abuse surfaces.
While only limited in exploring this complex moral terrain and is guilty of lurching in the final reel, dir. Robert Zemeckis lends class to this melodramatic portrait of a man-as-his-own-worst-enemy, and a maturing Denzel Washington is great to watch, finally rid of his archetypal righteous image.
Average rating (Good Enough). Showing 1-2 of 2 member reviews.
2 stars (Good Try) Good to see Denzel without a gun. Film and musical score get the Hollywood treatment unfortunately. Highlight is a scene stealer from John Goodman. ~Tubbs
3 stars (Good Enough) A bit of a grind, with some elements integrated poorly or handled cursorily. Denzel's great, and the crash is thrillingly (if implausibly) rendered, but Zemeckis' butterfly net isn't quite big enough to scoop up 'message' AND 'entertainment'. ~HiFi
