A successful blend of horror tension and comedic release - by which the viewer can forgive (or even root for) some mind-numbing violence - this is clearly conceived for an enthusiastic, non-squeamish audience, making a welcome heroine of an unlikely character who transforms into an ass-kicking survivalist. Sure, it's full of dubious decisions made by its characters-in-peril, but with expert instincts for the genre, director Adam Wingard ensures that's half the fun.
