Aroview: This superlative HBO policier - a marquee television event in 2014, and the first in an anthology of bespoke detective stories - pairs Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as mismatched investigators tracking a nihilistic killer in South Louisiana.
An outstanding exercise in Southern Gothic, literary influence, and rich cinematic form, the eight-part series boasts a continuity and breadth of vision rarely seen on the screen screen, benefiting particularly from the sole creative teaming of Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Joji Fukunaga (who wrote and directed every episode respectively). Though a wasteland for female characters and deeply misogynistic in its worldview, it nonetheless has set the bar extremely high for all crime series to come.
Season One: eight episodes across three discs.

2 stars (Good Try) MM flawed antihero reveals that he killed a drug dealer - but only because he was injecting his own 18 month old baby with crack-cocaine - a late model cardboard cutout hero we can all believe in - or not (Louisiana - seen from above is a reason to watch) ~URIKI
4 stars (Very Good) Brilliant acting and direction on this tribute to the dime store sleaze magazine. Writing is mostly top notch, the characters are great, with Louisiana a regular standout. One of Fukunaga’s best ~bikewrench
5 stars (Exceptional) Wow! It is a testament to the powerful performances of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson that the characters stay with you long after viewing. ~Haywara
5 stars (Exceptional) Really good suspencer ~emjay
5 stars (Exceptional) ~mvvm
3 stars (Good Enough) Fantastic theme song - totally appropriate and sets the right mood. McConaughey has the most interesting character but unfortunately doesn't enunciate his words very well.I will watch again with sub titles. ~Tubbs
4 stars (Very Good) The mystery itself is generic cliche (with loads of sexist baggage), but the characters and mood really get under the skin, and keep us riveted. Evocative cinematography and music choices augment the two excellent lead performances. ~fairbrother
