Orange is the New Black (TV Series)
Aroview: A bracing, darkly humorous addition to the women-in-prison genre, centred on the plight of a privileged young woman whose fling with a drug trafficker results in a lengthy stint behind bars.
Based on Piper Kerman's memoir, the series is less interesting initially as a 'fish-out-of-water' tale, soon finding its feet as a rich study of marginalized characters, gender and sexuality, and the cultural and religious melting pot that is prison - qualities that align it with the likes of THE WIRE (and the genre's original trailblazer, OZ) while satisfying the need for more full-bodied female storylines on screen.
