Spectacular Now, The
Aroview: This wistful teen romance, scripted and performed with a bracing naturalism, centres on a glibly charming high school senior whose casual dating of a "nice girl" develops into something more.
There's a soft, unpretentious lustre to this effortlessly observed coming-of-age drama, through which it eschews the louder cliches and tropes of the John Hughes school of romance while also getting to the emotional core of what makes those movies resonate. Particularly impressive are the lead actors, with Miles Teller nailing the underlying sincerity of his outwardly showy character, and Shailene Woodley appealing through subtle layers of sweetness and vulnerability.
