Myth of the American Sleepover, The
“A one-of-a-kind teen movie, which captures that distinctive moment in adolescent life when nostalgia, loss and anxiety begin to populate one's consciousness with ghosts.”~Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com
Aroview: A balmy summer night before the start of high school is the backdrop for this languid, moment-to-moment capsule of life as an idle American teenager.
Recalling the early work of David Gordon Green with its uncontrived dialogue and graceful mise-en-scene, this embues a done-to-death genre with a sense of youthful curiosity, desire, and adventure that movies on the subject rarely get right. Dividing its time between a number of interconnected characters, the film also treats teen mischief with a surprising tenderness and innocence – a refreshing change from the standard in-your-face attitude of misbehaving teenagers on screen.
