An acting tour-de-force for Hardy and also writer-director Steven Knight, who pulls off an ambitious high-wire act of sustaining tension (and pay-off) through purely psychological means, suspended on an entirely original premise. Those expecting usual genre conventions will find no such satisfaction, but its cutting edge of creativity will excite and reward those willing to pay attention, as the recognizable trials and tribulations of modern life take uncharted dramatic form.
