Sunset Song
Aroview: Dir. Terence Davies applies his refined visual sensibility to this luminescent adaptation of the Scottish literary classic of the 1930's by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, that spans six years in the life of a repressed Aberdeenshire farm girl who yearns for her independence on the eve of the First World War.
Faithful to the novel, its a romantic tragedy that has since become familiar and does strike the odd jarring dramatic note, but it captures (on 65mm film stock) the sweeping splendour of location vistas in New Zealand, Luxembourg and Scotland, and close-ups of model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn with impeccable taste.
