Aroview: The wunderkind director of WHIPLASH fashions another bold, contemporary love letter to the Jazz age, this time as a widescreen, technicolor romantic Hollywood musical that has the craft and the chutzpah to transport and uplift the viewer in a way that classic musicals were designed to do.
Totally irresistible for die-hard romantics, this hardly puts a foot wrong if you are prepared to go with it, though its enormous success also met with inevitable hype scepticism. Famously and embarrassingly "robbed" of its expected Best Picture Oscar at the 2017 Academy Awards, though Emma Stone didn't have to give her award back, thoroughly deserving her Best Actress honour with a beguilingly expressive performance.

4 stars (Very Good) Stone and Gosling's vulnerably goofy charms are a wonderful fit for the "classic" musical conceit. It sags a bit in the middle, and only a couple of songs really stand out, but at its best the synergy of colour, motion, and emotion is irresistible. ~fairbrother
1 star (Turkey) The most disappointing, gormless movie I've seen for a long time. I kept expecting the vivid primary colours and fake scenery to suddenly evolve into reality and soul-satisfying greatness, but it just didn't happen. ~Birdwing
1 star (Turkey) Very weak peaen to Hollywood. Brickbats would be better. Long & boring; only jazz towards the end prevents it dying in the roadway. ~Sandy
