David Byrne's American Utopia
“American Utopia isn’t just a concert doc, but also a life-affirming, euphoria-producing, soul-energizing sing-along protest film that’s asking us to rise up against our own complacency.”~David Ehrlich, IndieWire
Aroview: A Spike Lee directed document of former Talking Heads front man David Byrne's exuberant 2019 Broadway show, based loosely on his album American Utopia.
Hugely energetic and thought-provoking, this timely concert musical brilliantly captures Byrne's trademark rhythms and lyrical themes, placing them in the context of America's current political and social divisions. The show incorporates 21 songs, many of which were Talking Heads songs and featured on the earlier rock musical classic STOP MAKING SENSE. Lee shoots from multiple camera angles and gets the viewer closer to the performance than could ever be achieved from theatre seats. A thrilling experience of an artist still bursting with ideas and spirit.
