Three Popular Films by Jean-Pierre Gorin
Aroview: Three delightfully absorbing observational documentaries from director Jean-Pierre Gorin, well know for his collaborations with Jean-Luc Godard during his radical period. Made after the director moved to Southern California in the mid-70's, all three explore the hidden corners of American life with a distinct personal voice.
Poto and Cabengo (1980, 77 min) - A sociological investigation into a shared secret language invented by a pair of highly reclusive San Diego twins, which generated the interest of scientists and social workers alike.
Routine Pleasures (1986, 81 min) - Essential viewing for anyone who has ever wondered about the culture of model train hobbyists, this richly philosophical film explores the imaginary worlds and recreation of the past associated with this hobby through the work and ideas of legendary film critic and painter Manny Farber.
My Crazy Life (1992, 95 min) - This highly experimental, partly fictionalised documentary about a Samoan street gang living in Long Beach, California won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance for it's enthralling observations of a closed community with it's own rules, rituals and language.
