Blind Husbands / The Great Gabbo
Aroview: Two feature films on one disc featuring visionary Austrian-American silent filmmaker and actor Erich von Stroheim.
Blind Husbands (directed by Stroheim, 1919):
A sophisticated silent drama adapted from a story written by Stroheim himself, following a married couple vacating at a tourist resort in the Swiss Alps, who reckon with their own complex layers of jealousy, lust and repression when they meet a roguish Austrian Lieutenant.
The Great Gabbo (directed by James Cruze, 1929):
Stroheim plays a brilliant ventriloquist driven insane by his psychological attachment to a dummy, in this unusual pre-code sound musical. Betty Compson plays his ex-girlfriend and assistant who is caught up in his web of insanity.
