Beginning
“As a purely aesthetic cinematic experience, Beginning will surely number among the best of the year.”~Christopher Machell, CineVue
Aroview: A devout women of the Jehovah's Witness faith undergoes a profound personal crisis in this triumphant cinematic achievement for Georgian writer/director Dea Kulumbegashvili in her feature debut.
The setting is a remote mountainside village in Georgia, a predominantly Eastern Orthodox Christian country where the Jehovah's Witness community are ostracised. When they are attacked by an extremist group, Yana, the wife of a Jehovah's Witness leader a mother of one, struggles to make sense of the chaos around her.
Themes of obedience, sacrifice and religious intolerance are examined with a savage grace that has earned glowing comparisons to the best of Michel Haneke and Chantal Akerman.
