Lost for Words

USA 1999, 75 minutes
Dir. Alan J.W. Bell
Rating: [PG] contains coarse language
Genres: Drama, Comedy

Aroview: British drama with Thora Hird playing a mother whose health declines as she suffers a stroke and succumbs to dementia, and the impact this has on her son (Pete Postlethwaite).

Hird's authentic and unsentimental performance deservedly won her a BAFTA, and the difficult subject matter is peppered with some brilliant observational humour. Block out the soapy soundtrack and you might just find a deeply honest and poignant film about the struggles of old age.

Based on the autobiographical book of the same by Deric Longden, which follows on from his earlier novel "Diana's Story", also made into a film called "Wide Eyed and Legless".
